What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?
Fortunately, true orthodontic emergencies are uncommon. Most issues that arise during treatment, such as a loose bracket, poking wire, lost aligner, or mild discomfort, can be addressed with guidance from our team and a scheduled appointment if needed.
A true orthodontic emergency typically involves significant trauma to the teeth, mouth, or jaw, severe pain, or an injury that requires immediate attention. If you’re ever unsure whether your situation qualifies as an emergency, we encourage you to contact our office. We’ll help assess the issue and guide you toward the appropriate care.
For children experiencing a dental emergency, such as a chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth, our pediatric dentistry team is also here to help. As a combined orthodontic and pediatric dental practice, we’re able to provide comprehensive care for many urgent dental concerns, helping families get the support they need from a team they already know and trust.

How To Manage Minor Orthodontic Issues at Home
Many orthodontic issues can be temporarily managed at home until you’re able to visit our office for your next appointment. Here are a few simple tips for handling some of the most common concerns patients experience during treatment.
If a bracket becomes loose, avoid pulling on it or trying to remove it yourself. If it remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to reduce irritation. If the bracket comes off completely, save it if possible and contact our office to schedule a repair.
A wire that has shifted can sometimes irritate the inside of your cheeks or gums. Applying orthodontic wax over the area can help create a barrier and improve comfort. In some cases, you may be able to gently reposition the wire using a clean pencil eraser. If irritation persists, give us a call.
If a spacer or elastic tie comes loose or falls out, don’t attempt to replace it yourself. Contact our office, and we’ll let you know whether a visit is needed or if the issue can wait until your next appointment.
It’s normal to experience mild tenderness after your braces are adjusted or when you start a new set of aligners. Soft foods, warm saltwater rinses, and age-appropriate over-the-counter pain relievers may help improve comfort. Cold treats like smoothies or ice cream can also provide temporary relief.
If your aligner or retainer is lost, cracked, or damaged, contact our office as soon as possible. Depending on your stage of treatment, we may recommend wearing a previous aligner, moving to the next set, or scheduling a visit for a replacement.
